Police officer Ryan Domingo has been named Hawaii County Police Department’s “Officer of the Year.”

Police officer Ryan Domingo has been named Hawaii County Police Department’s “Officer of the Year.”

Domingo received the award, from the Hawaii State Law Enforcement Officials Association, for providing life-saving first aid to a 55-year-old woman shot May 13 in Hilo.

“The victim believed she was going to die. For more than 20 minutes, Domingo reassured her and kept her focus and calm. His comfort and compassion were critical in saving her life,” the Police Department said in a press release.

Domingo was also able to obtain important evidence by recording his conversation with the woman, police said.

The victim, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds to her left shoulder, right hand, left knee and right thigh, is expected to make a full recovery after months of rehabilitation.

Domingo received the award Sept. 21 at a banquet at the Sheraton Waikiki Resort.
